IF GOD EXISTS, WHY CAN'T WE SEE HIM?
If God really exists, why can't we see Him? Discover what the Bible and thoughtful reflection can teach us about how God reveals Himself to humanity.
IF GOD EXISTS, WHY CAN'T WE SEE HIM?
Have you ever asked yourself: “If God really exists, why can't I see Him?”
We can see the stars.
We can see the ocean.
We can see trees, animals, and other human beings.
We can observe cells, measure distances, and explore space.
But God?
We cannot simply look at Him the way we look at another person standing in front of us.
So a perfectly reasonable question arises:
If God exists, why doesn't He simply reveal Himself to everyone?
Perhaps you have heard someone say:
“I only believe what I can see.”
It sounds reasonable.
But is that really how we discover everything that exists?
THE PROBLEM: WE OFTEN EQUATE “NOT SEEING” WITH “NOT EXISTING”
We cannot directly see the air we breathe.
Yet we know it exists.
We cannot see the radio waves that carry our communications.
Yet we know they exist.
We cannot directly see love, thought, consciousness, or gravity.
Yet we observe their effects.
This tells us something important:
The fact that something cannot be directly seen does not necessarily mean that it does not exist.
So if God exists, perhaps the question is not simply:
“Why can't I see Him?”
But rather:
“How might God choose to reveal Himself to human beings?”
WHY DOESN'T GOD REVEAL HIMSELF IN AN OBVIOUS WAY TO EVERYONE?
This is a profound question.
Imagine that God physically appeared before every human being at every moment.
There would probably be much less debate about His existence.
But would that automatically mean that everyone would love Him, trust Him, or want to live according to His will?
Not necessarily.
We already know that a person can recognize someone's authority without necessarily wanting to follow them.
Biblical faith is therefore not simply about intellectually acknowledging that God exists.
It also involves having a relationship with Him.
THE TEACHING: GOD CAN REVEAL HIMSELF IN WAYS OTHER THAN THROUGH SIGHT
The Bible presents several ways in which God reveals Himself.
1. THROUGH CREATION
The beauty, order, and vastness of creation have led human beings throughout history to ask questions about their origin.
The Bible says:
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
— Psalm 19:1
Creation is not God.
But from a biblical perspective, it points toward His existence and greatness.
2. THROUGH HIS WORD
The Bible does not simply tell us that God exists.
It seeks to reveal who He is.
It presents God as Creator, Holy, Just, Merciful, and Loving.
That is why the question is not only:
“Does God exist?”
It is also:
“What does He reveal about Himself?”
3. THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
This is where Christianity makes an extraordinary claim.
The Bible teaches that God did not remain merely an invisible and distant reality.
He revealed Himself to humanity in a unique way through Jesus Christ.
The Gospel of John says:
“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son… has made him known.”
— John 1:18
In other words, for Christians, Jesus is not simply someone who speaks about God.
He is presented as the One who reveals God to humanity.
BUT THEN, WHY DOES GOD REMAIN INVISIBLE?
Perhaps God is not simply seeking to be seen.
He wants to be known.
He is not merely trying to impress our eyes.
He wants to reach our hearts, our minds, our conscience, and our will.
The Bible says:
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
— Jeremiah 29:13
Notice the expression:
“when you seek me.”
It suggests a personal journey.
God may reveal Himself, but human beings must also be willing to seek.
WHAT IF WE ARE LOOKING FOR GOD IN THE WRONG WAY?
Perhaps we expect God to appear before our eyes when He is inviting us to begin by listening.
Sometimes we want a spectacular sign.
An extraordinary proof.
A visible manifestation.
But God can also use much simpler things:
A passage from the Bible.
A moment of realization.
Another person.
A circumstance.
An answer to prayer.
An inner transformation.
A deep conviction.
This does not mean that every personal experience is automatically proof of God.
It simply means that seeking God is not limited to what our eyes can observe.
THE EVIDENCE: WHAT CAN WE HONESTLY SAY?
Let us be honest.
Science cannot place God inside a laboratory and demonstrate His existence in the same way that we might measure temperature or mass.
But that does not make the question irrational.
Philosophical questions about the origin of the universe, order, consciousness, morality, and existence itself have led many thinkers to seriously consider the existence of God.
Others reach different conclusions.
That is precisely why this question deserves genuine reflection rather than a superficial answer.
To seek God is to be willing to ask the right questions honestly.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TODAY?
Do not simply accept what someone else has told you about God.
Seek.
Read.
Reflect.
Ask questions.
Start with the Gospel of John.
Pay attention to what Jesus says about God, humanity, sin, love, faith, and eternal life.
And if you are sincerely searching for God, you can simply talk to Him.
You do not need complicated words.
You can pray:
“God, if You truly exist, I want to know You. Guide me in my search. Give me the light to recognize the truth and the courage to follow it. Amen.”
A DEEPER QUESTION IS WAITING FOR US
We began with:
“Does God really exist?”
Then we asked:
“If God exists, why can't we see Him?”
But there is an even more important question:
“IF I CANNOT SEE GOD, HOW CAN I KNOW THAT HE HEARS ME AND LOVES ME?”
Because knowing that God exists is one thing.
Discovering who He is and understanding His relationship with humanity is another.
